Project Overview
Blackburn & Co. Ltd was appointed by a valued repeat client, BPH Rail, to deliver a package of architectural metalwork safety enhancements at Ipswich Train Station car park. The project focused on improving public safety within a busy railway environment, requiring robust, durable solutions that could be seamlessly integrated into the existing structure.
Given the public-facing nature of the site, the works needed to meet stringent safety requirements while minimising disruption to station operations.
Scope of Works
Our scope included the design, manufacture, and installation of bespoke metalwork elements, comprising:
- Mesh infill panels to an existing staircase
- High-level railing infill panels to the car park roof perimeter
These additions were required to provide enhanced protection for members of the public, significantly reducing the risk of falls from height.
Design & Fabrication
All metalwork was designed specifically to suit the existing structures, with no allowance for modification to the original staircases or railings. As a result, detailed site surveys were carried out to ensure accurate measurements and a precise fit across all locations.
The panels were manufactured to withstand the demands of a high-traffic public environment. Finishes were selected based on exposure and durability requirements, with elements either hot-dip galvanised or galvanised and powder coated to provide enhanced corrosion protection and long-term performance.
Installation & Outcome
Installation works were carefully coordinated to ensure safe access and efficient delivery within a live railway car park. Our experienced site team successfully installed all panels to the existing steelwork, achieving a secure and seamless integration with the original structures.
The completed works have significantly improved public safety while maintaining a clean, functional appearance appropriate for a railway setting. The client was highly satisfied with the quality of the workmanship and the smooth delivery of the project.
